Alan Dershowitz Splits with Democrats over Israel

Prominent American attorney Alan Dershowitz announced he is leaving the Democratic Party and registering as a Republican, citing what he described as growing anti-Israel sentiment within Democratic ranks.
In an op-ed, Dershowitz, who has long identified as a Democrat, said he decided to “bite the bullet” and switch parties following recent Democratic support for an arms embargo on Israel and rhetoric from progressive candidates he characterized as hostile to the Jewish state.
“There is no denying that the hard-left, anti-Israel wing of the Democratic Party has moved from the fringe to the mainstream,” he wrote. He added that while Republicans also have “their own antisemitic fringe,” it has not gained comparable influence.
Dershowitz called the Democrats the “most anti-Israel party in US history,” arguing that the shift reflects a broader move away from centrist positions.
The move formalizes a political shift that has been developing in recent years. Dershowitz defended President Donald Trump during his first impeachment and has increasingly aligned with Republican positions on Israel-related issues.
He previously nominated former Trump officials Jared Kushner and Avi Berkowitz for the Nobel Peace Prize for their role in the Abraham Accords.
Dershowitz said he plans to actively oppose Democratic electoral victories, writing that he would “work hard to prevent the Democrats from gaining control of the House and Senate.”
