While Iran sits at the diplomatic table trying to avert possible American strikes, its most powerful security official is simultaneously locking arms with the Houthis, the same group currently firing missiles toward Israel and disrupting global shipping.

Amid amid soaring tensions with the United States, Iran’s national security adviser Ali Larijani held direct talks today in Muscat, Oman, with Muhammad Abdul Salam, the political spokesperson and chief negotiator for the Iran-backed Houthis.

The meeting took place on the same day Larijani was in the Omani capital carrying Tehran’s official response to the latest round of indirect nuclear negotiations with Washington. Photos of Larijani sitting face-to-face with the senior Houthi figure have been widely circulated on social media.

Larijani, a close confidant of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was primarily in Muscat to engage with Omani officials, including Sultan Haitham bin Tariq and Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, as Oman mediates between Iran and the Trump administration.

This is Tehran playing both sides in classic fashion: talking peace through Oman while keeping its Axis of Resistance fully operational.
