A Syrian court issued death sentences in absentia on Tuesday for ousted president Bashar al-Assad in a landmark ruling that marks the beginning of accountability proceedings in the country following the regime's collapse.
The court also sentenced Assad's younger brother, Maher al-Assad, who commanded the notorious Fourth Division of the Syrian military, along with their maternal cousin Atef Najib. All three were convicted on serious charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during Syria's 14-year conflict, which claimed approximately half a million lives.
The verdicts represent the first major judicial proceedings undertaken by Syria's transitional authorities since rebel forces entered Damascus in December 2024, ending the Assad family's decades-long rule.
