Spanish authorities have begun conducting strict border inspections on arrivals from Italy, screening approximately 200 passengers at six of the country's busiest airports on the first day of renewed controls. The Spanish move comes amid a sharp diplomatic confrontation between Madrid and Rome over illegal immigration policy.
Spain's Interior Ministry announced that oversight of flights and ships arriving from Italy will remain in effect until September 7, 2026. The decision follows Italy's unilateral suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain beginning August 1, 2026, with Rome announcing it would continue border checks at least through August 15, 2026.
The development represents a dramatic departure from the Schengen Agreement, which allows free movement of European Union citizens between member states without border controls.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani addressed the tensions in an interview with Corriere della Sera, stating, "We hope we can lift the suspension soon, as soon as there is no longer any risk." Italian officials clarified that their inspections primarily target non-EU citizens arriving from Spain.
The escalation between the two countries began following a mass migration wave of approximately 72,000 people to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa on July 30, 2026. Following that incident, Rome decided to act independently, prompting a retaliatory response from the Madrid government.
During the first weekend of enforcement, Spain's National Police officers screened 199 passengers on 12 different flights arriving from Italy. The inspections were conducted at airports in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao, Alicante, and Valencia.
