Minutes after US President Donald Trump announced an "energy ceasefire" agreement between Russia and Ukraine, sources close to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denied Sunday that any such deal had been reached, saying Ukraine was unaware of the details of the agreement Trump had proclaimed.

According to CNN, a Ukrainian official told the network that "the announcement of the agreement was news to us, but we will agree to a ceasefire in the energy sector if Russia agrees to it as well." Zelensky himself told Axios: "If President Trump agreed on this with Putin, please tell us when the ceasefire starts. We are ready and will agree to it."

Separately, another source told the British Financial Times that "Ukraine has no information at this stage about the energy ceasefire agreement that Trump announced." According to the source, "right now our repair crews are working to restore electricity and water supply in Kyiv following Russian strikes that occurred a short time ago. Nobody has heard of this ceasefire."

Trump announced roughly an hour earlier that an energy ceasefire had been reached between Russia and Ukraine, following significant pressure he applied on Kyiv and even calling for Zelensky's replacement after Ukrainian strikes on Russian fuel production infrastructure drove up global prices. According to the brief statement he posted on his social network Truth Social, Russia and Ukraine signed a "mutual non-attack agreement" aimed at removing the countries' energy infrastructure from the target list.

Trump wrote that "an energy ceasefire will take effect immediately between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides agreeing to it. Don't break the agreement! Thank you for your attention to this matter."

The surprise announcement comes after a direct campaign by Russia and Ukraine against each other's infrastructure, with Russia attacking electricity infrastructure deep inside Ukraine ahead of winter, while Ukraine systematically destroyed Russian oil facilities.
