Terror in the air

Lightning hits plane over Chile; all safe

Dramatic footage from inside a LATAM Airlines flight shows the moment a lightning bolt struck the aircraft en route to Santiago, lighting up the cabin with a blinding flash. The plane landed without incident.

Lightning Strikes Passenger Plane Mid-Flight Over Chile; All Land Safely

Passengers aboard a LATAM Airlines flight in Chile experienced moments of panic this week when a lightning bolt struck the aircraft mid-flight, illuminating the cabin with a blinding flash. The incident, captured on video by one of the passengers, has since spread across social media.

The strike occurred on Tuesday, October 20, aboard flight LA341 from Antofagasta in northern Chile to the capital, Santiago. The plane was approaching its destination when it encountered severe weather conditions, part of a winter storm system that brought heavy rain and thunderstorms to central Chile.

Footage circulating online shows the powerful flash at the moment of impact. The sudden burst of light startled passengers, and cries of alarm could be heard throughout the cabin. What had been a routine flight turned into a harrowing experience for those on board.

Despite the frightening scene, the incident ended without injuries. LATAM Airlines confirmed that the aircraft had been struck by lightning and clarified that its planes are designed and certified to withstand such events.

In a statement, the airline said its aircraft are equipped with systems that safely disperse the electrical charge. The company confirmed that the plane landed normally at Santiago's airport, and all passengers and crew disembarked safely.

Modern passenger aircraft are built to handle lightning strikes, which can occur during flight in certain weather conditions. The plane's conductive outer shell allows the electrical current to travel along its exterior, following a principle known as a Faraday cage, which helps protect those inside.

In addition, insulation and electrical protection systems are designed to minimize the risk of damage to the aircraft's electronic systems and other critical components. While a lightning strike may appear especially dramatic from inside the cabin, it does not necessarily indicate immediate danger to the plane.
