Took responsibility

Spain minister quits after train disaster

Oscar Puente steps down following two major rail disasters in under a year, saying a transport minister in a country like Spain cannot continue in office after two accidents of this magnitude

Spain's transport minister Oscar Puente announced his resignation Tuesday evening, one week after the deadly train collision in Toledo province that left at least 69 people dead and 180 injured.

In his resignation statement, Puente addressed last Wednesday's disaster alongside another serious crash that occurred this past January in Badajoz province, which killed 46 people and injured 152 others. "A transport minister in a country like Spain cannot continue in office after two accidents of this magnitude in less than a year," he said.

The crash that led to Puente's resignation took place last week in Toledo province in central Spain. A preliminary investigation indicates it was caused by a failure in the computer and synchronization systems that tracked train movements in the area. Since the accident, criticism of Puente has mounted steadily. He initially refused to step down, but has now taken responsibility and announced his departure just three weeks before Spain's parliamentary elections.
