In a startling escalation of regional rhetoric, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warned today, that Israel may target Turkey as its next military and political adversary once its current conflicts with Iran and Hezbollah subside.

"Israel Cannot Exist Without an Enemy"

Speaking to the state-run Anadolu News Agency, Fidan claimed that Prime Minister Netanyahu is strategically incapable of governing without a designated foe. "We see that Israel may seek to define Turkey as a new rival after Iran," Fidan stated, adding that the Israeli government "cannot sustain itself without an enemy."

Threats in the Mediterranean and Syria

The Foreign Minister also took aim at the growing trilateral alliance between Greece, Cyprus, and Israel, arguing that the partnership breeds "distrust, problems, and war" rather than regional stability. He called for a new "regional security agreement" that respects sovereignty and excludes exclusive alliances that marginalize Turkey.

Regarding the situation in Syria, Fidan labeled Israeli airstrikes a "serious risk" to Turkish national security. He suggested that Israel is currently "restraining" its actions in Syria only because of its direct confrontation with Tehran, warning that the IDF may shift its focus once conditions allow.

Diplomatic Friction

While noting that both Iran and the United States have shown "sincerity" in attempting to reach a ceasefire, Fidan explicitly blamed Israel for being the primary obstacle to regional peace. Despite the harsh rhetoric, he expressed hope that the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz would be resolved through peaceful means and highlighted the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara as a pivotal moment for the alliance.
