Police Arrest Senior Aid 48 Fundraiser in Ra'am Vote-Buying Probe

Police have arrested a senior fundraising official at Aid 48, a nonprofit affiliated with the Ra'am party, on suspicion of involvement in an election bribery scandal.

Police suspect that the individual took part in a scheme in which voters were paid to support Ra'am, the party headed by Mansour Abbas.

In a separate case, three residents of Bedouin communities in the Negev were arrested overnight Monday into Tuesday on suspicion of planning to hand out cash to citizens in exchange for votes for Ra'am. Israel Police searched homes in Segev Shalom and Ar'ara in the Negev. Police said the raids turned up envelopes holding tens of thousands of shekels in cash, along with notes and other material believed to be linked to the alleged offences.

On Tuesday, when he arrived to vote, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pointed to the police announcement about the arrests in a statement to the media.

"They seized three of Ra'am's top money men with envelopes of cash in the south. This is criminal, they'll get to everyone, consider yourselves warned," Netanyahu said.

He also declared, "They're trying to steal the election from us," and claimed that turnout in the Arab sector in the south was far higher than in the Jewish sector.
