EU Slams Israel’s Gaza Offensive as ‘Disproportionate and Deplorable’
Top EU officials condemn Israeli strikes while ignoring Hamas’ use of human shields and responsibility for Gaza’s suffering

As Israel continues its prolonged military campaign against Hamas, criticism from European leaders is intensifying largely sidestepping the security threats Israel faces and Hamas' exploitation of civilians as human shields.
In recent remarks, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz questioned Israel’s strategy in Gaza, saying:
“I no longer understand Israel’s objectives in the besieged Strip. The extent of civilian harm can no longer be justified as anti-terror operations.”
On Wednesday, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas joined the criticism, claiming that Israel’s strikes in Gaza have exceeded what is necessary to fight Hamas.
“We do not support privatized aid distribution,” she said, referring to Israel’s attempt to create independent channels for humanitarian assistance. “Humanitarian aid must not become a weapon.”
Kallas further accused Israel of delaying aid deliveries, despite the EU being the primary donor to Gaza, and declared, “People’s suffering is unbearable.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also weighed in, calling Israel’s most recent airstrikes targeting Hamas infrastructure “deplorable” and “disproportionate.”
The statements highlight a growing diplomatic rift between Israel and the European Union over the war in Gaza despite ongoing Hamas rocket fire, the holding of hostages, and ongoing civilian casualties on both sides.
