Iran Rejects Direct US Talks in Doha

Mohsen Rezaei turned down a Qatari proposal to seat American diplomats face to face with the Iranian delegation, leaving Tehran and Washington to keep negotiating through intermediaries.

Iran's Rezaei Rejects Qatari Plan for Direct US Talks in Doha

Iran's Mohsen Rezaei has rejected a Qatari proposal to bring American diplomats and the Iranian delegation together for direct meetings in Doha. The Qatari-led mediation is the same track that, as JFeed reported last week, American and Israeli officials expect to be followed by a bombing campaign against Iran if it fails.

Diplomatic sources cited by the Emirati outlet Erem News said the discussions in Doha have focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for partial sanctions relief and an eased blockade.

On Tuesday, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran will not begin negotiations on its nuclear program until Washington accepts Iran's conditions for reopening the strait, as JFeed reported.

On Monday, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran is holding intensive consultations through mediators, including Qatar and Pakistan. "If the U.S. accepts our conditions, the Strait of Hormuz will reopen and negotiations will resume," Araghchi said.

Iranian President Pezeshkian said on Monday that Tehran had received "extensive authority" from the Supreme Leader. "But there are still boundaries that cannot be crossed, we will not allow harm to the sovereignty of the nation," he said.
