Iran Currency Collapse Shown in Viral Video

As U.S. sanctions bite and oil exports halt, the Iranian rial has lost half its value in 2026, with Google now listing its exchange rate as 0.00

Iranian Currency Collapse: Video Shows Massive Stacks of Cash Needed to Buy 8 Grams of Gold

The Iranian rial has experienced a dramatic collapse, with the U.S. dollar now trading at approximately 2.07 million rials.

This represents a loss of roughly 50% of the currency's value since the beginning of 2026, driven largely by American sanctions. Abdolnaser Hemmati, governor of Iran's Central Bank, acknowledged that the country's oil exports have "effectively stopped."

The rapid devaluation has prompted many Iranians to convert their savings into stable assets, particularly gold and foreign currencies. Due to the currency's diminished purchasing power, buying even a small quantity of gold now requires transporting enormous stacks of cash. The United Arab Emirates has announced it is freezing financial transfers with Iranian banks, further complicating the situation.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded to the crisis by stating, "We believe that structures like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the BRICS group are effective tools for breaking the monopoly of power and moving toward a more just international order."

Meanwhile, Mohsen Rezaei, a senior official on Iran's Supreme National Security Council, warned that any foreign nation supporting the sanctions would be considered to have committed "an act of war."

A video circulating on social media dramatically illustrates the currency's collapse, showing an Iranian merchant selling just 8 grams of gold in exchange for seemingly endless piles of rial banknotes.
