Europe Is No Longer Ours

What was true after 1945, should be understood also from the 2025 prespective

Dutch Protests
Dutch Protests (Molly Quell)

Two days ago, in the heart of Amsterdam, the Dutch right held a counter-demonstration under the slogan: “Protect the Netherlands - Foreigners Out.”

Flags of Dutch provinces were waved, regions where the percentage of foreigners is lower and religiosity is higher. Ironically, in those same areas, there are almost no Jews.

Many Israelis look to Europe with a kind of hope, that a conservative or nationalist “awakening” might stand up to Islamism, anarchism, and progressive ideology.

But I believe this hope is misplaced.

That very wave will not save the Jews; it may just turn against them.

The protests in Amsterdam passed through the city’s old Jewish quarter, a neighborhood steeped in memory and loss, where Nazi chants were heard and hands were raised in salute.

For the small, frightened Jewish community, it was a chilling reminder of the past returning to life.

So what do we really have left in Europe?

Who stands by us?

The Dutch police? The same police that, after a Maccabi Tel Aviv game, declared it could not secure Jewish institutions or events, even on grounds of conscience?

There is no point fighting for a continent that has lost its moral compass.

Europe is no longer our home.

We cling to it out of habit, not out of hope.

Return home -

to the land where you never have to apologize for existing.

Because self-respect and national pride are not luxuries.

They are the foundations of human existence.
