Millions LOST: The Stunning Cost of Indonesia’s Anti-Israel Visa Move Over Olympics
IOC halts discussions with Indonesia over future Olympic events following visa denials to Israeli athletes, jeopardizing the country's 2036 Olympics hosting ambitions.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has delivered a significant blow to Indonesia’s ambitions as a major sports host, announcing a halt to all discussions regarding future large-scale events. This drastic measure follows Indonesia’s denial of visas to Israeli athletes intending to participate in the 53rd Artistic Gymnastics World Championships held in Jakarta.
The consequence is immediate and severe: Indonesia will be blocked from submitting bids to host the 2036 Summer Olympics or the 2030 Youth Olympic Games, both of which the nation had identified as central national objectives.
Violation of Olympic Principles
Following an emergency meeting of the IOC’s executive board, the committee clarified that denying access to athletes based on nationality constitutes a fundamental breach of the Olympic Movement's core principles. These principles include non-discrimination, political neutrality, and the autonomy of sport.
"Global sport is based on clear rules, values, and strict adherence to equal opportunity and sportsmanship," stated Yael Arad, Chair of the Olympic Committee of Israel (OCI). "The unequivocal statements regarding Indonesia's disgraceful conduct resonate strongly in the field of sport."
IOC's Corrective Actions
The IOC's decisions outline a path of strict enforcement and consequences for the Indonesian National Olympic Committee:
Israel Vows Continued Presence
Arad expressed gratitude for the robust stance taken by IOC President Kirsty Coventry, who "firmly opposed futile attempts to disrupt world sport."
She affirmed that despite the diplomatic challenges, Israeli athletes would not be deterred:
"Israeli athletes will continue to appear on the grand, significant stages, and we will continue, as at the Paris Olympic Games, to demonstrate the Israeli excellence of our wonderful athletes."
Arad concluded by noting that this IOC decision serves as a powerful initial sign that "we will continue to fight and act on behalf of Israeli sport." The penalty sends a clear message that the exclusion of any nation from international competition will incur substantial financial and reputational costs for the host country.
