The first week of the Champions League Round of 16 has come to a close. After an action-packed night featuring 17 goals across four games, the focus shifted to the defensive highlights. Goalkeepers Alisson Becker and Wojciech Szczęsny played pivotal roles in securing narrow 1-0 victories for Liverpool and Barcelona, respectively, while Bayern Munich dominated Bayer Leverkusen, and Inter Milan secured an advantage for the return leg.

PSG 0 - 1 Liverpool: A Night for Goalkeepers

Liverpool is arguably the best team in the world this year. Under coach Arne Slot, they topped their Champions League group and are leading the Premier League. However, in their match against PSG, they appeared to be the underdogs. The French team held 70% possession and took 27 shots, compared to just two.

Ultimately, in football, possession and shots mean little if goals aren’t scored. Despite having only two shots on goal, Liverpool managed to clinch the win. Darwin Núñez came on in the 67th minute, and Harvey Elliott entered in the 86th. Just 70 seconds after Elliott's substitution, Núñez assisted him for the winning goal. Alisson Becker was instrumental in Liverpool's success, making an impressive nine saves. Next week at Anfield, will the balance of power look different?

Barcelona also secured a victory thanks to their goalkeeper, winning the match with only ten players. Benfica dominated possession with 52% and had 26 shots, compared to Barcelona's ten. The Catalan side lost Pau Kovaresi to a red card in the 22nd minute. Two teams that racked up nine goals in their group-stage clash could only muster a single goal in their latest matchup.

Benfica’s goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin made several notable saves, but Szczęsny stole the spotlight. Barcelona found their fortune on the other end in the 61st minute with a goal from Raphinha. The return leg next week will take place at Barcelona's Estadi Montjuïc. What will the outcome be?

Bayern Munich 3 - 0 Bayer Leverkusen: A German Derby in the Champions League

In a match reminiscent of the Madrid derby, the new format provided us with a German derby for the first time in the Round of 16. The previous season's double winners, Bayern Munich, faced off against perennial champions, led by Harry Kane, who still aspires for his first title in history. This season is trending toward Bayern, and last night's match continued that trajectory.

Kane opened the scoring in the 9th minute, with Jamal Musiala doubling the lead in the 54th. Bayern was reduced to ten men in the 62nd minute due to Nordi Mukiele's red card, but Kane sealed his brace with a penalty in the 75th minute. Will Leverkusen manage to mount a comeback next week?

Feyenoord 2 - 0 Inter Milan: A Lesson for the Local Rivals

In this matchup, a derby was avoided as Feyenoord had eliminated Inter’s city rivals, AC Milan, in the previous round. Inter provided a lesson to their Dutch opponents with an away victory that gives them an advantage heading into the return leg. The Italians held 58% possession and had 13 shots on goal, compared to Feyenoord's eight.

Unlike the first two matches, the dominant team emerged victorious here. Marcus Thuram opened the scoring in the 38th minute, followed by Lautaro Martinez's goal five minutes after halftime. Piotr Zielinski missed a chance to seal the deal by missing a penalty in the 65th minute. Unlike their Dutch counterparts, who suffered a humiliating defeat against Arsenal, Feyenoord still has a chance to come back in the second leg. Can they do it?
