Spanish football woke Tuesday morning to grim news: Jesús de Miguel, a 30-year-old striker for Tenerife, died following a collision with an opposing goalkeeper during a match the day before.
The incident occurred in the final minutes of a match between Tenerife and Andorra, with the score tied 2–2. A long ball was sent toward midfield, and de Miguel chased after it. The opposing goalkeeper, Jesús Ovono, left his goal and charged toward the ball in an attempt to clear it. The two collided with force, the goalkeeper's knee striking the striker's chest.
De Miguel collapsed on the pitch and lost consciousness. Players from both teams rushed to summon medical staff, who treated him for several minutes before he was taken by ambulance to hospital. The goalkeeper was shown a straight red card for the challenge, and the match was halted in the 108th minute with the score unchanged.
Tenerife initially reported that the striker's condition was stable despite the severity of the incident, and that he was being treated in intensive care. But overnight his neurological condition deteriorated, and the club announced Tuesday morning that he had died in hospital at 8:00 a.m.
In a statement, the club wrote: "With broken hearts, a lump in our throats, and unable to believe this is real, we announce the tragic death of Jesús de Miguel. There are no words that can comfort or ease the immense pain."
The tragedy drew a wave of responses from across the football world. Barcelona and Real Madrid issued condolences to the family and the club, and Andorra also expressed deep sorrow over the player's death.
Following the incident, the Spanish football federation decided to postpone all matches scheduled for Tuesday, including fixtures in the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina. A presentation event for Spain's under-21 national team was also cancelled in solidarity with the player's family and the people of Tenerife.
