Tenerife Striker Jesús de Miguel Dies After Collision With Andorra Goalkeeper

CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel has died at age 30, a day after suffering cardiac arrest following a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Spanish second division match, the club announced Tuesday.

Tenerife said de Miguel died at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, November 3. "There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness," the club said in a statement.

The incident occurred in the closing minutes of Monday's match at Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López. De Miguel was chasing a long ball when Owono, an Equatorial Guinea international, rushed out of his area to clear it, and the goalkeeper's knee struck the striker in the chest. De Miguel collapsed and lost consciousness. Owono was shown a straight red card, according to El Español, and the match was abandoned with the score tied 2-2.

Spanish media reported that de Miguel went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance and was resuscitated. He was admitted to the intensive care unit at Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital in Santa Cruz, where Tenerife initially described him as stable but in serious condition. The club later reported that his neurological condition had worsened overnight.

According to Spanish broadcaster COPE, Owono was deeply shaken and intended to apologize personally to the player's family. FC Andorra sent its condolences to de Miguel's family, teammates and Tenerife.

De Miguel began his professional career with Leganés B in 2015 and played for nine Spanish clubs. He joined Tenerife last year and was part of the squad that won promotion back to the second division in May.
