Electric Aircraft Completes First Full-Scale Flight on $5 Worth of Power

A full-scale electric aircraft took to the skies for the first time last week, completing a 27-minute test flight powered entirely by batteries in what may prove to be a pivotal moment for the aviation industry.

The X1, developed by American company Heart Aerospace, lifted off from Plattsburgh International Airport in upstate New York. The company describes it as the largest electric aircraft ever to fly.

Measuring approximately 75 feet in length with a wingspan of roughly 105 feet, the X1 weighed more than 11 tons at takeoff. During the flight, the aircraft reached an altitude of about 1,100 feet above ground level, with its electric propulsion system delivering over one megawatt of power.

The test flight included taxiing, takeoff, climb, maneuvering, and landing, all conducted under special experimental flight authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Perhaps the most striking figure from the flight: the entire operation consumed approximately $5 worth of electricity.

Heart Aerospace points to this cost as evidence of the economic potential of electric propulsion in aviation, particularly as jet fuel prices remain volatile.

According to the company, jet fuel prices in the United States averaged around $3.50 per gallon in the week ending August 7, a 63 percent increase compared to the previous year.

The X1 is not intended to carry commercial passengers. It serves as a full-scale demonstrator designed to test technologies, aerodynamics, and flight performance for the aircraft the company hopes to produce in the future.

Heart Aerospace's next planned aircraft is the ES-30, a 30-seat regional plane based on a hybrid-electric propulsion system.

Major airlines have already committed to supporting the project and the ES-30, including United Airlines, Air Canada, and JSX.

United Airlines welcomed the maiden flight, noting that commercial electric aircraft have the potential to transform both the passenger experience and airline economics.

Air Canada emphasized that transitioning to clean energy in aviation will require a combination of solutions, including sustainable aviation fuels and new aircraft technologies.

The X1's flight was brief, the altitude modest, and the aircraft remains far from carrying passengers commercially. But the significance of those 27 minutes extends well beyond the numbers: for the first time, an electric aircraft at a scale representing a commercial passenger plane reached the skies, powered throughout its entire flight by energy costing roughly the price of a sandwich.
