Users of Android devices, particularly those with Google Pixel phones, are reporting a troubling phenomenon: Gemini, Google's artificial intelligence-powered assistant, appears to be inserting itself into private conversations without being explicitly summoned, and in some cases, responding in ways that seem directly related to the discussion at hand.
One prominent account was shared on Reddit by a Pixel 9a user, who described how Gemini interrupted a private conversation he was having with a friend during a car ride. According to his report, this wasn't a generic response or a mistaken activation of voice search, but rather a comment that directly addressed the topic the two were discussing.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion among users, some of whom say they had previously disabled the assistant's voice activation feature, only to discover after an update that it had been turned back on. Based on responses in the thread, the likely source of the problem is a setting called "Talk to Gemini hands-free," which allows Gemini to be activated without touch during navigation in Google Maps and Waze.
How to Disable the Setting
Users who want to prevent unwanted voice activation can open the Google Maps app and follow these steps:
- Tap on the profile picture
- Select "Settings"
- Choose "Navigation"
- Select "Gemini"
- Turn off "Talk to Gemini hands-free"
On the same screen, users can also access "Manage Voice Match" and disable Voice Match, Google's voice recognition system, as an additional measure to reduce automatic activations.
A Sensitive Transition from Google Assistant to Gemini
The reports come at a delicate time for Google, as the company has begun the process of replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on mobile devices. Google announced that starting September 4, Google Assistant will no longer be available on mobile, with Gemini becoming the company's sole and primary assistant on Android.
The forced transition has already drawn criticism from users, who are raising questions about capability gaps between the veteran assistant and Gemini, particularly regarding control, privacy, and informed consent for activating voice features.
