A 42 year old Israeli tourist was arrested at Paphos International Airport in Cyprus after security personnel discovered two live rounds of ammunition in his backpack. The incident occurred on Friday, August 21, as the passenger was preparing to board a return flight to Israel. During routine security screening, airport screeners identified the forgotten military ammunition inside his hand luggage.
Following the discovery, local authorities immediately detained the passenger, though the legal process moved rapidly. On the same day, police brought the traveler before the Paphos District Court to face formal charges. The court ordered the individual to pay a fine of 600 euros, which he paid immediately before being released from custody.
The incident underscores the ongoing risks for Israeli citizens who travel abroad using backpacks previously carried during military service, reserve duty, security work, or shooting range visits. Even single items of forgotten ammunition can trigger serious weapons charges under foreign laws, resulting in immediate detention, law enforcement questioning, and formal criminal proceedings.
Foreign legal jurisdictions hold travelers strictly accountable for the contents of their baggage, regardless of whether the ammunition was left inside accidentally. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and consular representatives regularly urge travelers to perform thorough baggage inspections prior to departure. Officials recommend checking every small pocket and compartment, or using separate, dedicated bags for civilian travel and military service to prevent foreign legal entanglements.
