Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were married Friday night at Madison Square Garden in a star-studded ceremony, and the man who married them was, of all people, Adam Sandler.
Swift's representative confirmed the news in a statement, describing Sandler simply as a friend of the couple. According to TMZ, Sandler did not just officiate. He also sang the couple an original song during the ceremony, delivering it in the same warm, slightly goofy register that has made him one of the most beloved entertainers in America for over three decades.
Sandler's connection to the couple runs through Kelce more than it does Swift. The two became close after Kelce appeared in Happy Gilmore 2, Sandler's 2025 comedy sequel, and Sandler has spoken openly about the friendship since. As for Swift, Sandler has been a devoted fan for years, previously admitting he knows every lyric to every one of her songs and crediting her music with becoming a bonding ritual with his daughters.
Sandler, who is Jewish, has never hidden his identity from his comedy. He wrote and performed the Hanukkah Song decades ago and has continued weaving Jewish humor and references into his films ever since, from Eight Crazy Nights to You Don't Mess with the Zohan. Several commentators noted the irony of a Jewish comedian best known for playing lovable underdogs presiding over what tabloids are calling America's royal wedding, complete with roughly 1,000 guests, a Christian Dior Haute Couture gown, and an Empire State Building lit up in blue in celebration.
Notably, officiating does not make the ceremony a Jewish wedding in any formal sense. Friends can legally officiate weddings in many jurisdictions after becoming ordained, regardless of anyone's religion, and there is no indication the ceremony followed Jewish ritual. Still, the pairing of Sandler's low-key, unmistakably Jewish comic persona with the most hyped celebrity wedding in recent memory gave plenty of people something to smile about, well beyond Swifties and Chiefs fans alike.
