What began as a formal state visit produced one of its most memorable and human moments, a king giving a president the bell from a submarine that proudly bore his name nearly 82 years ago. A truly classy and epic gesture.

In one of the most touching and symbolic gestures of the ongoing UK state visit, King Charles III presented President Donald Trump with a deeply personal gift during last night’s white-tie state dinner: the original brass bell from the British Royal Navy submarine HMS Trump.

The submarine, launched in 1944, served with distinction in the Pacific theater during World War II. The bell, engraved with “TRUMP 1944”, was removed from the vessel’s conning tower and specially restored for the occasion.

During his toast, King Charles said warmly:

“Mr. President, I am delighted to present to you, as a personal gift, the original bell which hung on the conning tower of your valiant namesake.”

He then delivered the perfect line that brought laughter and emotion across the room:

“Should you ever need to get hold of us… just give us a ring.”

The moment quickly went viral, with many describing it as one of the most thoughtful diplomatic gifts in recent memory, blending history, humor, and the enduring “Special Relationship” between the United States and the United Kingdom.

President Trump, visibly moved, thanked the King and said the gift was “incredible” and “very meaningful.”

The HMS Trump bell now joins other historic artifacts in the White House, serving as a powerful symbol of Anglo-American friendship forged in wartime and strengthened today.

The King also had the whole hall laughing, as he said, "You recently commented, Mr. President, that if it were not for the United States, European countries would be speaking German. Dare I say that if it wasn't for us, you'd be speaking French.”

Earlier, he spoke beautifully and hilariously at Congress, proving that he is still very much 'with the program'.
