Pygmy Blue Whale Surfaces at Australian Pier

Near Busselton Jetty in Western Australia, a pygmy blue whale measuring approximately 24 meters (nearly 80 feet) surfaced and swam alongside the pier.

Footage captured by Megan Wood shows the marine giant moving slowly and gracefully through the water, its massive body breaking the surface each time it rose to breathe. Witnesses reported that the whale passed less than ten meters from where they stood.

The pygmy blue whale ranks among the largest creatures on Earth. Despite its name, this is a true giant that can reach lengths of 24 meters, falling short of its larger relative, the Antarctic blue whale, by only a few meters, the Antarctic species can grow to approximately 30 meters.

The species is considered rare and classified as endangered in Australia. Its population suffered severe damage during the whaling era, and recent studies have been tracking its migration routes, feeding areas, and the threats it faces from human activity.

The Busselton area is no stranger to pygmy blue whales. Geographe Bay, where the jetty is located, lies along the species' migration corridors, making sightings possible during certain seasons. Still, such a close encounter with a creature of these dimensions is an extraordinary experience.

The jetty itself extends approximately 1.84 kilometers into Geographe Bay and is recognized as the longest timber pier in the Southern Hemisphere. The location offers visitors sweeping views of the water, yet even there, the appearance of a 24-meter marine giant directly beneath visitors is far from routine.

Those present described their initial shock when they realized the large shadow in the water was not a boat or other object, but a massive pygmy blue whale. Within moments, the rare encounter became stunning documentation that vividly illustrates the enormous dimensions of one of the largest animals alive on Earth today.
