In the community of Porters Lake, near Halifax, three streets are called "This Street", "That Street" and "The Other Street". In the northern city of Iqaluit, one street is named "The Road to Nowhere".
One street is even called "Adanac", the word "Canada" spelled backwards. The same city has 26 streets named after golf courses.
American engineer Brian Brenner explained that the phenomenon is linked in part to urban sprawl, which created a need to name many new streets, sometimes without any consistent system.
Vancouver has set up a committee to regulate street names, in an attempt to give them more meaningful designations. But across Canada, streets with names that raise eyebrows, and sometimes amuse internet users, can still be found.
