Last night, approximately 200 anti-Zionist and pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside Park East Synagogue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side to protest an event organized by Nefesh B’Nefesh, an organization that promotes and facilitates Aliyah (Jewish immigration to Israel).

Protesters, organized by groups including Within Our Lifetime (WOL), Pal-Awda, and the New York chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace, chanted slogans that included:“Death to the IDF”

“The resistance is glorious”

“Intifada revolution” and “There is only one solution: Intifada revolution”

“Globalize the Intifada”

“We don’t want no two states, we want ’48”

Signs carried by demonstrators reportedly read “Zionism is a death cult” and “No settlers on stolen land.”

Some attendees entering the synagogue reported being heckled by protesters.

A smaller group of pro-Israel counter-protesters was also present, separated by NYPD barricades. Counter-protesters blew shofars and whistles and shouted phrases including “F**k Hamas.”

The NYPD maintained a heavy presence with metal barricades; the protest was permitted and no arrests were reported.

Park East Synagogue, led by Rabbi Arthur Schneier, a 93-year-old Holocaust survivor, shares its entrance with the Park East Day School.

The demonstration has drawn sharp criticism from Jewish organizations, who described the location choice and certain chants as antisemitic and intimidating to the Jewish community.
