Russian bots still active despite claims

Viral reports claimed a Ukrainian strike on Russian servers wiped out bots spreading genocide and "Free Palestine", but the reality is different, and the antisemitic messages are still being pushed

Reports circulating online in recent days claimed that Ukraine struck a Russian server farm, causing large numbers of Russian bots to disappear. As a result, the reports said, there was a dramatic drop in popular anti-Western phrases, among them "genocide" and "Free Palestine". But antisemitic messages are still being spread.

Ukraine struck servers belonging to the Russian company Yandex last week, damaging the site's functionality and operations. In practice, the drop in Russian bot volume came from the fact that Yandex's "crawlers", bots used to find content on the web so it appears in search results for users, were disabled following the damage to the company's servers.

As a result, the "bots" that disappeared were those operated by Yandex, not necessarily the "bots" used to spread Russian and antisemitic propaganda. In most cases, bot farms used to spread messages and disinformation try to hide the source of their activity by using proxy servers: It's not certain whether they are operated from Russia, even if the messages serve the Russian narrative.

At the same time, Cloudflare published that no changes were recorded in the volume of automated traffic shared from Russia during the past week, which may indicate that the propaganda accounts are still operating now, regardless of the damage to the Russian search company's servers.
