Aviel Murder-Suicide: Father Kills 6-Year-Old Son, Takes Own Life

A devastating murder-suicide has shaken the quiet community of Aviel in the Alona Regional Council near Binyamina. Dudu Melamed, 43, allegedly shot and killed his six-year-old son Saar before taking his own life on Sunday morning, leaving residents struggling to comprehend the unthinkable tragedy that unfolded in their midst.

The bodies were discovered by the child's grandfather, who had arrived at the family home and immediately contacted emergency services and police. Both father and son were found with fatal gunshot wounds, with no signs of life when first responders arrived at the scene.

Unauthorized Weapon Access and Warning Signs

According to preliminary police investigations, Dudu was alone with Saar at the mother's family home in Aviel when he accessed the family safe without authorization and removed a handgun. Authorities revealed that shortly before the incident, he sent a brief but chilling message to his sister, who is currently in the United States, stating simply: "I'm struggling."

The couple had been separated, and Saar was their only child. Aharon Azoulay, the safety coordinator for the Alona Regional Council, emphasized that the family had not been known to social services. "This was a normative family without any unusual background," Azoulay stated, adding to the shock felt throughout the community.

A Devoted Father's Unthinkable Act

What makes this tragedy particularly incomprehensible to those who knew the family is the reportedly close relationship between Dudu and Saar. Multiple residents described the father as exceptionally devoted to his son, spending countless hours caring for him.

A family acquaintance provided context about the home-schooling arrangement that had defined much of Saar's young life. "The father was extremely dedicated to the child. The mother didn't want to send him to kindergarten or school; she insisted on homeschooling. Only in the past year did the boy begin attending kindergarten," the source revealed.

Erez Gilad, a member of the moshav council who knew Dudu personally, struggled to reconcile the man he knew with the horrific events. "This is a tremendous family tragedy. We are all shocked and in pain," Gilad conveyed. "The incident caught us completely unprepared. I know Dudu personally. He watched over the child and was deeply connected to him. He raised him impressively; there was an amazing bond between father and son. There was great love between them—he always cared for him tremendously."

Despite the outward appearance of a devoted father-son relationship, Gilad acknowledged that the community was unaware of deeper struggles within the household. "We didn't know what was happening inside the family," he admitted. "The authorities provided assistance to them; not the entire community knew what was occurring in the home. I knew there were difficulties, but this is an incomprehensible tragedy—we never imagined it would go in this direction."

Residents repeatedly noted that Dudu was frequently seen with Saar, with the boy essentially being "his entire life," as multiple community members described. The stark contrast between this public image and the devastating outcome has left the tight-knit community grappling with questions about what warning signs may have been missed.
