ChatGPT has crossed one billion monthly active users worldwide, marking a historic milestone for OpenAI and placing the platform at the center of the global race for artificial intelligence dominance.

According to new data from research firm Sensor Tower, ChatGPT reached the milestone in May 2026, less than three years after its launch in November 2022. The pace makes it one of the fastest-growing consumer applications ever, outpacing the adoption curves of platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and Google Maps.

The growth has been rapid from the start. ChatGPT reached one million users within five days of launch and passed 100 million monthly users within two months. By February 2026, OpenAI said the platform had reached around 900 million weekly active users and about 50 million paying subscribers.

The new figure gives OpenAI a powerful advantage in the AI market, but the race is far from settled. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, is growing quickly and increasingly positioning itself as OpenAI’s strongest rival. According to Sensor Tower, Claude reached around 56 million monthly active users in the second quarter of 2026, with annual growth of about 640%. ChatGPT’s growth over the same period was far slower, at 62%, though from a much larger base.

Elon Musk is also part of the widening AI battle through xAI and its Grok chatbot, which is built into X and is being positioned as a more direct, real-time alternative in the consumer AI market. At the same time, Musk’s SpaceX is preparing for its own giant stock market debut, meaning investors may soon be weighing two of the biggest technology stories at once: the AI boom and the commercial space boom.

The competition is already affecting user behavior. Sensor Tower found that US users who installed the Claude app in the first quarter of 2026 reduced their ChatGPT usage time by about 5% within a month compared with their earlier habits.

The rivalry is also moving toward Wall Street. Anthropic filed confidential paperwork this week for a US initial public offering, while OpenAI is reportedly preparing its own prospectus in the coming weeks. The expected listings could become a major test of whether public investors are willing to support the huge valuations now attached to AI companies.

For OpenAI, crossing one billion users is a defining moment. It proves that AI chatbots have moved from novelty to daily infrastructure for work, study, coding, writing and search.

But it also sharpens the next question: whether ChatGPT can turn massive global adoption into long-term business dominance as rivals grow, costs rise and the AI market becomes more crowded.
