Garlic has been known for centuries for its many health benefits both in nutrition and as dietary supplements, and is often mentioned for its role in lowering blood pressure, improving cholesterol, and supporting the immune system.

However, health experts warn that overuse or consumption of garlic supplements without medical supervision can cause severe side effects, especially among certain groups.

Increased Risk of Bleeding

One of the most notable benefits of garlic is its ability to reduce blood clotting, but this property can be dangerous in rare cases. Using garlic supplements, especially with blood thinners, may increase the chance of bleeding. Possible symptoms include easy bruising, slow wound healing, frequent nosebleeds, blood in urine or stool, and in severe cases, internal bleeding or even brain hemorrhage following a head injury could occur.

Stomach and Digestive Disorders

Some people experience digestive problems a few hours after eating garlic, such as nausea, heartburn, and stomach pain. The reason for this is that garlic contains compounds called fructans, carbohydrates that can cause fermentation in the intestines. These symptoms are more common in people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome or those allergic to certain foods.

Allergic Reactions

Although rare, garlic or raw and cooked garlic can cause food allergies in about 1 percent of the population. Symptoms include diarrhea, rashes, dizziness, and stomach pain. In some cases, these reactions may require immediate medical intervention, especially if they are severe or frequent.

Burns and Skin Irritation

The use of garlic is common in certain popular home remedies, but applying it directly to the skin can cause severe irritation or skin burns, especially when left for long periods. Doctors recommend avoiding these methods completely and seeking medical help in case of blisters, itching, or skin infections.

Bad Breath

Although not medically dangerous, bad breath is one of the most common side effects, both from eating raw garlic and from supplements. The smell can last for long hours and affect social and professional interactions.
