Flooding Hits Chabad's 770 Headquarters

Heavy rains inundated the main sanctuary and basement areas of the iconic Crown Heights building, prompting yeshiva students to move books and tefillin to higher ground before resuming their studies

Chabad Students Rescue Sacred Texts as Flooding Hits 770

Intense rainfall that swept through Brooklyn on Thursday evening caused significant flooding at 770 Eastern Parkway, the world headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement in Crown Heights. Water penetrated the main sanctuary hall and lower-level areas of the historic building, prompting yeshiva students to rush to protect religious books and tefillin (phylacteries) from the rising water.

As water began pooling inside, the students quickly removed volumes from lower shelves in the affected zones and relocated them to higher shelves and elevated surfaces. Tefillin and personal items stored in low-lying basement lockers were also moved to dry areas above the waterline.

The building's maintenance crew quickly mobilized to address the situation. Once the rainfall intensity decreased, they began mopping up water and cleaning the damaged sections. Despite the challenging circumstances, the students relocated from the flooded areas to unaffected parts of the building, including the expanded women's section, where they continued their Torah study as the storm raged outside.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Brooklyn and Manhattan shortly before 5:40 PM, which remained in effect until 7:45 PM, as intense rain moved through the city during rush hour. New York remained under a flood watch until 2:00 AM Friday morning, with forecasters warning that rainfall rates could reach approximately two inches per hour in certain areas.

While flooding at 770 during severe storms is not unprecedented, Thursday's incident was considerably less severe than previous events. This improvement is attributed to extensive drainage upgrades and repairs undertaken by the building's management to prevent water intrusion. In recent years, the historic structure has experienced various dramatic incidents, including a deliberate vehicle collision that caused substantial damage.

The timing of the flooding was particularly unfortunate, it occurred immediately after a thorough cleaning of the main study hall in preparation for the month of Tishrei, including work during the past week to clean and polish the floors.
