The Sephardic community is in deep mourning this Tuesday following the bitter news that Hagaon Rabbi Rachamim Eliyahu Mazuz Zt"l has passed away at the age of 78 on the day of Lag BaOmer after a period of prolonged suffering and illness.

Born in Tunisia on the 17th of Kislev, 5708 (1947), to his illustrious father, Hagaon Rabbi Matzliach Mazuz Zt"l (the 'Ish Matzliach'), Rabbi Rachamim was recognized for his brilliance and diligence from a young age.

His brother, the Rosh Yeshiva Hagaon Rabbi Meir Mazuz, frequently shared that even in their youth, their father would refer complex halakhic queries to Rachamim due to his extraordinary mastery of later commentators (Acharonim) and Responsa literature. "Rabbi Rachamim is a Posek," his father famously declared while he was still a young man.

Following the tragic murder of his father in Tunisia, Rabbi Rachamim was the first of the brothers to depart for Israel. This move followed a profound dream experienced by his mother, in which her late husband appeared and told her that their son Rachamim should leave first. After a challenging journey through a transit camp in France and a long voyage, he arrived in the Holy Land, where he built a home dedicated to Torah alongside his wife, Rebbetzin Tamar.

A Legacy of Halakhic Literature

Rabbi Rachamim served as the head of 'Machon HaRav Matzliach' and was the driving force behind publishing the works of his father and teachers. He was most widely recognized for his authoritative 'Ish Matzliach' glosses on the Mishnah Berurah, which have become a staple in Sephardic halakhic study. In 2019, on the occasion of his 50th wedding anniversary, his family published his Responsa series, Kisse Eliyahu, covering all four parts of the Shulchan Aruch.

The Final Days

His health began to decline significantly late last year. In accordance with the advice of his brothers and family, the names 'Chaim' and 'Shalom' were added to his name as a merit for recovery. However, sadly, he passed away on the holy day of the Hiloula of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai.

He leaves behind a blessed generation of children, grandchildren, and students who continue his path of Torah and fear of Heaven.

Information regarding the funeral procession will be updated as it becomes available.
