A devastating tragedy struck the Jewish community of Buenos Aires, Argentina, when an 84-year-old blind Jewish woman died in a fire that erupted in her home in the Villa Santa Rita neighborhood in the western part of the city.
Her 83-year-old relative, who was in the house at the time of the incident, received medical treatment at the scene for an anxiety attack.
The fire broke out early Monday morning, around 4:14 a.m., on Yom Kippur, in a two-story residential building on Cesar Diaz Avenue 3200, between Cuenca and Campana streets. Fire crews from the Buenos Aires City Police and emergency medical teams were called to the scene following a report of the blaze.
According to a report by the Argentine news agency Noticias Argentinas, the woman was found inside the house without signs of life, and after the medical team arrived, they were forced to pronounce her dead. Her 83-year-old relative was also located in the house and was treated on site after suffering an anxiety attack following the traumatic event.
According to reports in local media outlets, the fire was concentrated in the front section of the house, and firefighters worked to extinguish the flames and ventilate the building. The Argentine newspaper Clarín reported that the deceased was found after firefighters who were summoned to the scene intervened.
Police and investigative authorities have opened an inquiry into the circumstances of the fire and are attempting to determine how it started.
