Benny Gantz, leader of the Blue and White party and former defense minister and IDF chief of staff, issued a strong defense Monday evening of opposition politician Yair Golan following recent comments by Sara Netanyahu, wife of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Gantz firmly rejected any attempt to link Golan to accusations of treason, emphasizing his military service and his actions during the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel:
"Yair Golan is a brave fighter who fought and risked his life for the State of Israel over many decades, including on October 7 ... Any attempt to connect him with treason is not only false, it harms the fighting spirit of our people."
Gantz used the opportunity to reiterate his call for a state commission of inquiry to investigate the events of October 7. Blue and White, a centrist party, has been pressing for such an investigation since the attack.
"The time has come to establish a state commission of inquiry that will put an end to conspiracy theories and enable lessons to be learned, so that brave fighters will never again have to face such a terrible failure," he said.
