Israeli carrier El Al made the unusual decision Friday to cancel flight LY8 from New York to Israel moments before takeoff, after determining that departure delays would cause the aircraft to land after the start of Shabbat. Passengers had already boarded and were seated when the airline reversed course.
The original departure time had been pushed back enough that the flight could no longer arrive in Israel before sundown Friday. Rather than operate the flight during Shabbat, El Al chose to cancel it entirely.
The aircraft, stationed at John F. Kennedy International Airport, returned to the gate where passengers were asked to disembark. Luggage was also removed from the plane. The airline has not yet released details about when a replacement flight will operate or what accommodations have been arranged for the stranded travelers.
