A routine traffic enforcement operation turned violent Wednesday afternoon in central Beit Shemesh, a city west of Jerusalem, when a driver suspected of operating under the influence of drugs struck two police detectives and was shot by officers.
The incident unfolded on Hama'apilim Street when plainclothes detectives from the Beit Shemesh station, conducting proactive enforcement against dangerous driving and crime, noticed a private vehicle being driven in a manner that raised their suspicions. Based on the driver's behavior, officers developed reasonable grounds to believe he was operating the vehicle while impaired by drugs, posing a concrete danger to other road users.
The police team decided to intervene immediately to remove the suspected driver from the road and prevent a potential fatal accident. Detectives approached the vehicle and instructed the driver, a 31-year-old man, to pull over for inspection and identification. Instead of complying with the officers' instructions, the suspect responded violently: he pressed hard on the accelerator, suddenly speeding directly toward the detectives standing nearby, and struck two of them.
Police identified the immediate threat and stated that the impact on the officers and the vehicle's continued movement posed a direct and immediate danger to the lives of law enforcement personnel at the scene. In response, detectives drew their personal firearms and fired at the vehicle in order to neutralize the threat and stop the driver's rampage before additional bystanders or officers could be harmed.
Following urgent calls to emergency dispatch centers, numerous medical teams from United Hatzalah and additional police units were rushed to the scene on Hama'apilim Street, with police vehicles blocking the area to traffic. United Hatzalah emergency medical responders from the Jerusalem district, Asher Yungreiz and Menachem Weizman, were first to arrive at the scene of the ramming and shooting and began providing urgent medical treatment to the wounded.
Yungreiz and Weizman, the first United Hatzalah responders on scene, recounted the tense moments: "We arrived quickly at the location and found a casualty suffering from penetrating injuries as a result of the gunfire. We provided him with life-saving medical treatment that included stopping complex bleeding, bandaging and sealing wounds, and then he was evacuated to Shaare Zedek Hospital with his condition at that stage defined as serious."
The suspect driver was evacuated in an intensive care ambulance to receive continued urgent medical treatment in Jerusalem, with a police force accompanying him closely and preparing to interrogate him as soon as his medical condition permits.
Medical teams provided initial treatment to the two police detectives who were struck by the vehicle during the suspect's attempt to flee. Both officers were evacuated to receive medical treatment at the hospital suffering from injuries, with their condition defined as light. Large police forces and forensic investigators continued operating at the scene for several hours, closing the street to traffic, collecting forensic evidence and interviewing eyewitnesses, as part of opening a comprehensive investigation to examine all circumstances of the serious incident.
