Teen Arrested for Playground Hit-and-Run in Shfaram

Israeli police in the Galilee district have arrested an 18-year-old resident of Bir al-Maksur in connection with a hit-and-run incident that left two 8-year-old children moderately injured while they were playing in a playground in Shfaram.

The suspect, who has never held a driver's license, allegedly rode a scooter recklessly into the playground, struck the children, and fled without offering assistance or waiting for emergency responders.

The incident occurred several months ago during evening hours, when police received an unusual emergency call reporting a traffic accident near the northern Arab-Israeli city of Shfaram. According to initial reports, a scooter entered a children's playground at high speed, hit two children who were playing on the equipment at the time, and the rider immediately left the scene.

Both victims, both aged 8, were evacuated to a hospital for medical treatment and listed in moderate condition. The Galilee district's traffic investigation unit immediately launched a comprehensive inquiry into the serious incident, collecting witness statements, reviewing security camera footage from the area, and gathering intelligence.

During the investigation, detectives succeeded in identifying the suspect as an 18-year-old resident of Bir al-Maksur who has never obtained a driver's license. According to the findings, on the day of the incident the suspect was riding a Teemax-brand scooter when he entered the playground and drove through it in a life-threatening manner. After striking the children as they played, the suspect fled the scene and hid the vehicle at a relative's property, far from his own home, in an apparent attempt to conceal evidence.

Once the investigation became active, police raided the suspect's home approximately three weeks ago and arrested him. During a search of his residence, officers seized ammunition and materials suspected to be drugs, further complicating his legal situation.

Simultaneously, police also arrested the suspect's 22-year-old relative, a local resident who allegedly helped him hide the scooter after the accident. When the relative was arrested, officers found scooter parts that are suspected to have come from the vehicle involved in the incident, which had been dismantled in an alleged effort to destroy evidence. Both suspects were taken in for questioning by the Galilee district investigation unit, and their detention was extended for a second time today until August 16, 2026, by the Haifa Magistrate's Court.

Chief Superintendent Roni Hinawy, head of the Galilee district traffic division, stated: "Israel Police officers will continue to act decisively against criminal drivers and acts of road violence with the goal of bringing lawbreakers to full justice. Galilee district officers will continue to conduct determined enforcement with an emphasis on two-wheeled vehicles and micro-mobility devices, and to conduct thorough investigations also against those who tamper with crime scenes, in order to prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law."
