Trump Approval Drops Amid Iran Tensions

New Reuters/Ipsos poll shows only 33% of Americans approve of president's performance, matching his previous term's lowest point, while 80% believe U.S. involvement in Iran will be prolonged

President Donald Trump faces a significant erosion of public confidence, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll released Monday. The survey found that just 33% of Americans approve of his performance in office, the lowest level since he began his current term. Conducted over four days and concluding Monday, the poll represents a two-percentage-point decline from an earlier survey this month.

The findings paint a challenging picture for the president: 64% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with his performance. The current approval rating matches the low point Trump reached during his previous term in December 2017. The poll surveyed 1,166 American adults nationwide and carries a margin of error of 3 percentage points in either direction.

The decline in Trump's standing comes against the backdrop of ongoing military operations against Iran, which began after the president ordered joint strikes with Israel. The conflict has disrupted approximately one-fifth of global oil trade, leading to sharp increases in fuel prices across the United States, a development that directly affects American households and could harm the electoral prospects of Trump's Republican allies in the upcoming November midterm elections.

Public Expects Years-Long Engagement

Perhaps the most striking finding in the poll concerns public expectations about the conflict's duration: 80% of Americans, including 87% of Democrats and 71% of Republicans, believe U.S. involvement in Iran "will continue for an extended period." Only 16% of respondents think the conflict will end within a few weeks, as Trump has promised.

The results arrive at a particularly sensitive moment. The midterm elections are just months away, with Republicans seeking to maintain their congressional majority. Trump's falling approval rating and public anxiety about the war could significantly impact the party's performance at the polls.

Trump returned to the White House last year with nearly half the country supporting his presidency. However, his popularity has taken a substantial hit this year, largely due to the decision to enter into conflict with Iran. The economic burden on American households, combined with widespread belief that the war is far from over, creates a complex situation for a president who campaigned on promises of stability and prosperity.
