South Africa Crocodile Attack: Missing Businessman Found

A week-long search for a missing Gauteng businessman has come to a chilling conclusion in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province. Following a dramatic helicopter operation in the predator-infested Komati River, authorities confirmed Saturday that human remains were discovered inside the stomach of a euthanized crocodile.

The Heroic Recovery: "Captain Pottie" vs. The River

The South African Police Service (SAPS) released footage of a high-risk mission to retrieve the reptile, showcasing the bravery of Captain Johan "Pottie" Potgieter.

Suspended by a hoist from a SANParks helicopter, Captain Potgieter was lowered directly into the murky, fast-flowing waters of the Komati River. His task was to secure the carcass of a large crocodile that had been euthanized by authorities earlier that day.

The predator was identified by Potgieter after he noticed it had a "massively full belly" and refused to move despite the noise of overhead drones and helicopters. It was a particularly difficult operation because the river was swollen from recent heavy rains, creating treacherous currents and zero visibility, all while other crocodiles circled the area.

A Search Turned Tragic

The 59-year-old businessman, whose name has not yet been officially released, vanished last Monday night.

The man’s Ford Ranger was found trapped and abandoned on a low-lying bridge near Komatipoort after being swept away by flash floods. While search teams initially hoped to find the man alive, the high concentration of crocodiles near the vehicle shifted the focus of the investigation.
Upon euthanizing the "suspicious" reptile and opening its stomach, pathologists discovered human body parts.

Official Investigation Ongoing

Acting Mpumalanga Police Commissioner, Major General Dr. Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the search and rescue teams for their dedication in "extreme and dangerous conditions."

Forensic Status: While the remains are strongly believed to be those of the missing businessman, SAPS spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo stated that final confirmation will depend on lab results and DNA testing.
