US Accuses Israel of Syria Strike

Tom Barrack criticizes alleged Israeli airstrike on Idlib military airfield, urging restraint and diplomatic engagement

Tom Barrack

Tom Barrack, the United States envoy to Syria, publicly blamed Israel on Tuesday for airstrikes conducted overnight against a military airfield in Idlib province. Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attacks, though Syrian media outlets reported that Israeli Air Force jets carried out the operation. The strike came one day after a Turkish military delegation visited the area.

Barak expressed strong concern over what he characterized as an unwarranted military action. "We are very troubled by the Israeli airstrikes against the Abu al-Duhur base, which constitute an unnecessary escalation that does not contribute to regional stability," he said.

He noted that the al-Sharaa government, referring to Syria's current administration, has not adopted an aggressive posture or deployed proxy forces, and has repeatedly expressed a desire to reduce tensions with Israel. The US envoy added that Washington has previously hosted, and will continue to host, discussions aimed at encouraging diplomatic solutions.

"We call for prioritizing restraint and dialogue over additional military incidents," he concluded.
