Sales or fake?

November sales: discount or bluff?

November's shopping events are already underway, with discounts that look tempting. But between the prices slashed by tens of percent hide traps that could cost you dearly.

November sales

Israel’s November shopping season is underway, with ShoppingIL, the annual online sales event led by Google Israel, running today and tomorrow, November 4-5. Discounts are being offered on clothing, bedding, toys, household goods and electronics, but consumer advice outlets are urging shoppers to compare prices before buying, since a large percentage off does not necessarily mean a lower price.

This is the 13th year of ShoppingIL, which Google runs together with the Economy Ministry’s Blue and White headquarters, which promotes Israeli-made goods, and the price comparison site Zap. According to Globes, about 3,000 Israeli businesses are taking part this year, around 600 of them for the first time. Globes also reported that Google does not require participating businesses to offer a minimum discount and does not track the size of the discounts on offer.

Several more sales dates follow later in the month. Chinese Singles’ Day on November 11, led by AliExpress, tends to suit small accessories and gadgets that do not need complex warranty or service, though buyers should compare the final price including shipping and any applicable taxes. Black Friday falls on November 27 this year, and is worth watching mainly for expensive items such as appliances and electronics that shoppers were planning to buy anyway. Cyber Monday on November 30 focuses on online purchases, with some retailers extending their weekend sales and others launching new ones.

Many Israeli chains have already started their November promotions, and several are stretching their ShoppingIL offers beyond the official two days. In fashion, Renuar and TwentyFourSeven are advertising up to 70% off selected items, and H&O is offering up to 70% off on its website. Golf, Delta and Castro are advertising up to 50% off, with Israel Hayom reporting that Golf’s 50% offer applies to club members and new members. Golbary is offering 20% off selected items from its new winter collection in stores and online through November 7, and Factory 54 is offering 20% off selected items. Urbanica is selling two pairs of jeans for 140 shekels throughout November, and Aldo is holding a VAT-free sale on participating items.

For children and babies, Golf Kids is offering 40% to 50% off its winter collection, Skip Hop is offering 50% off, and Nuby is offering 25% off, excluding gift sets. Carter’s and OshKosh are running a buy-two-get-four promotion, subject to the sale’s terms.

In home and kitchen goods, Vardinon and Naaman are advertising up to 60% off hundreds of items. Vardinon’s most prominent offer is a double cotton bedding set for 200 shekels instead of 650, available online only from November 4 to 10 or while stock lasts, with an additional 10% off during ShoppingIL. Sultam is offering 50% to 70% off hundreds of cookware, bakeware and storage items, Cook and Bake is advertising up to 80% off, and Magnus is offering 20% off on its website on November 4 and 5.

In cosmetics, Sabon and Bath & Body Works are offering 50% off a range of items, and L Makeup is offering 25% off makeup and skincare. Shufersal Online is advertising up to 60% off thousands of products across categories.

The offers listed are based on retailers’ announcements in early November and were not independently price-checked at each store. Some apply only online, only to club members, only to certain models or only while stock lasts, and terms may change. The phrase “up to” also deserves attention, since a sale of up to 70% often covers only a limited selection, certain sizes or leftover stock from previous seasons.

The most reliable test of a deal is not the percentage shown on the site but what the same product costs at competing stores and what it cost before the sale began. A coat marked down from 499 shekels to 249 shekels looks like a 50% saving, but if another store sells the identical model for 279 shekels at full price, the real saving is much smaller. For expensive products such as vacuum cleaners, washing machines and computers, shoppers should search by the exact model number, since a single different letter or digit can indicate a different model with different specifications. Shipping, installation, extended warranties and return costs can also change the real price considerably.

Consumer experts point to three common traps. Countdown clocks and messages such as “sale ends at midnight” are designed to push quick decisions, and while some sales really are time-limited, that is no reason to skip a price check. Some sites display a sale price that depends on a coupon code, a minimum purchase or joining a loyalty club, so the figure that matters is the one on the payment page. And low prices can be offset by shipping fees: a 39-shekel product with a 29-shekel delivery charge is a very different deal. Purchases from abroad may also carry taxes, fees and return costs.

Israeli consumer protection law generally allows shoppers to cancel an online or other distance purchase within 14 days of receiving the product or the transaction details document, whichever is later, with certain exceptions. Senior citizens aged 65 and over, people with disabilities and new immigrants have up to four months to cancel when the transaction included a phone call or chat. When a purchase is canceled because the buyer changed their mind, the business may charge a cancellation fee of 5% of the price or 100 shekels, whichever is lower, and must refund the money within 14 days of receiving the cancellation notice. No cancellation fee applies when the product is defective, does not match its description or the business breached the agreement. Israeli cancellation rules should not be assumed to apply to foreign websites, so shoppers buying from abroad should check the site’s return policy and return shipping costs before ordering.

Whether to buy now or wait for Black Friday depends mainly on the product. If a shopper has found an item they were already planning to buy, compared prices and confirmed the discount is real, there is little reason to wait, and no guarantee the price will fall further. For expensive items with no urgent need, tracking the price across ShoppingIL, Singles’ Day and Black Friday allows a real comparison instead of reliance on advertised percentages.
