In a significant blow to the Iranian military leadership, the Israel Defense Forces have confirmed the elimination of Asghar Baqeri, the commander of the Quds Force Special Operations Unit, known as Unit 840. The operation, which was executed by the Israeli Air Force following precise intelligence from the Military Intelligence Directorate, took place in Tehran. Baqeri had held the command since 2019 and was responsible for a global network of terror operations targeting Israeli and American assets. His death represents a major strategic victory for Israeli security forces, as Baqeri was the primary architect of numerous plots involving the infiltration of weapons into Israel and the coordination of attacks from Syrian and Lebanese territory.

Dismantling Unit 840

Asghar Baqeri was a high-value target who had spent years rising through the senior ranks of the Quds Force. Under his leadership, Unit 840 specialized in planning and executing clandestine operations far beyond Iran’s borders. One of his primary focuses was the establishment of terror cells in the buffer zone between Israel and Syria. To achieve this, Baqeri and his deputy, Mohammad Reza Ansari, personally recruited and directed Syrian nationals who had formerly served in the Assad regime's military. These cells were tasked with attacking IDF forces operating along the border, creating a constant state of war in the Golan Heights.

Beyond regional attacks, Baqeri was a central figure in Iran’s efforts to smuggle advanced military-grade weaponry directly into Israeli territory. He coordinated terror activities within Israel’s sovereign borders and utilized proxies in Lebanon to maintain pressure on the northern front. The IDF stated that his elimination is part of a broader, ongoing campaign to dismantle the operational capabilities of the Quds Force and prevent the export of Iranian terror. By striking the heart of the regime’s special operations branch in its own capital, Israel has sent a clear message regarding the vulnerability of the Iranian leadership. Military officials believe this will cause significant disruption to Unit 840’s ability to launch new attacks against Israeli and American citizens in the immediate future.
