Saudi Arabia launched an international initiative to establish a global defense coalition aimed at protecting critical shipping lanes and securing freedom of navigation. The Saudi Ministry of Defense convened an extraordinary summit in Riyadh bringing together military leaders and diplomatic officials to address ongoing maritime disruptions caused by Houthi rebel blockades against Saudi ports and Iranian actions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The conference brought together senior military brass and representatives from 43 countries alongside European Union delegates. The primary focus centered on countering escalating threats against international commerce, including direct strikes on commercial vessels, energy tankers, and critical offshore infrastructure.
Saudi defense authorities outlined the core objectives of the gathering in an official statement released following the sessions. "The Ministry of Defense of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hosted today a meeting of the Chiefs of the General Staff, state representatives, and the European Union delegation in the Kingdom to discuss the Kingdom's initiative to establish the 'Multinational Maritime Defensive Coalition,' as part of efforts to strengthen maritime security, protect international shipping lanes, and confront threats affecting freedom of navigation and global trade," the statement read.
Delegates discussed operational frameworks, foundational governance documents, and command and control arrangements for the proposed force. "Participants discussed the draft charter of the Multinational Maritime Defensive Coalition, its foundational documents, organizational structure, command and control arrangements, working mechanisms, and future steps," official Saudi sources noted, adding that the goal is to "ensure an effective institutional foundation that will strengthen maritime cooperation among member states to address common maritime threats in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden."
The dual pressure exerted by Iranian disruptions in Hormuz and Houthi blockades near Bab al-Mandab has forced international powers to reconsider collective naval defense protocols that were previously delayed.
According to statements provided by maritime security experts to REUTERS, the creation of a formalized, multi nation institutional framework in Riyadh represents a direct response to rising insurance costs and supply chain disruptions affecting global energy and cargo markets.
