Two Indian sailors are missing following an Iranian strike on the oil tanker Petro Dolphin off the coast of Oman overnight.

India's Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed that nine crew members were rescued safely and that the search for the two missing sailors continues.

The tanker, flying the flag of Nicaragua, was carrying eleven Indian crew when it was hit in the anchorage area of Sohar Port in northern Oman. The local coastguard is conducting search and rescue operations, and India said it is coordinating efforts with the relevant authorities. The Indian embassy in Oman also said it is monitoring the incident and is in contact with local officials.

The assessment is that Iran is behind the attack.

At the same time as the incident off Oman, a second tanker was reported hit. The Valthera, flying the flag of the Marshall Islands, was struck by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, according to India's Foreign Ministry, and a fire broke out on board following the impact. All eleven Indian crew members aboard were reported safe.

India's Foreign Ministry condemned the strikes on both tankers on October 11 and warned that the repeated attacks on commercial shipping could escalate tensions in the region.

New Delhi called for an immediate de-escalation and for the conflict to be resolved through "dialogue and diplomacy."
