Saudi-Houthi escalation

Houthis hit second Saudi airport in a day

Saudi Arabia's King Fahd International Airport in Dammam attacked tonight, forcing dozens of flights to divert. Earlier today, Riyadh's main airport was struck; last night's attack on another airport killed 12 and triggered Saudi airstrikes on Yemen.

Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) confirmed tonight (Sunday) that King Fahd International Airport in Dammam was attacked. Dozens of flights are circling or being diverted to alternate airports as security and emergency teams conduct damage assessments and safety checks.

The strike comes hours after the Houthis launched an earlier attack on Riyadh's main airport. Last night, at least 12 civilians were killed in another airport attack; Saudi Arabia responded with airstrikes, and the Houthis answered with a fresh barrage.

Last night's attack sharply raised tensions between the rivals after the Houthis fired a combined missile barrage that killed dozens, wounded scores more, and caused heavy damage to an airport terminal. The attack drew a Saudi response against Sanaa airport, and the Houthis fired another wave of missiles at the Saudi facility.

It remains unclear where the escalation is heading, whether this is a momentary flare-up that will pass, or the renewal of a conflict that could spiral into a broader war between Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni rebels.
