American Jewish media personality Ben Shapiro has been selected to light a torch during Israel’s official 77th Independence Day ceremony on Mount Herzl, as announced by Minister of Culture and Sport Miri Regev on Sunday. Shapiro, known internationally for his vocal advocacy of Israel, was chosen based on recommendations from the Public Advisory Committee, which oversees honorees for the annual torch-lighting event.

Minister Regev praised Shapiro as “one of the greatest supporters of the State of Israel in the world,” highlighting his dedication to defending Israel’s legitimacy and right to self-defense, particularly since the outbreak of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. “Ben brings the Israeli voice to his millions of followers around the globe and does so with eloquence, courage and unflagging determination,” she said, noting that his selection represents the country’s appreciation for his ongoing efforts in public diplomacy.

Ben Shapiro, who identifies as an Orthodox Jew, is the founder of the conservative news outlet The Daily Wire and hosts one of the most-listened-to political podcasts in the United States, The Ben Shapiro Show. With a massive online following that spans tens of millions across platforms, Shapiro has become one of the most influential right-wing commentators in the U.S., using his platform consistently to speak out in support of Israel and against antisemitism worldwide.

This year’s torch-lighting ceremony will be held under the theme of “Bridges of Hope,” emphasizing individuals and initiatives that unite Israeli society and offer a shared vision for the future. The torchbearers are chosen for their role in fostering unity, resilience, and national pride. Shapiro joins a select group of honorees, including freed hostage Emily Damari and bereaved father and Olympic medalist Oren Smadga, both announced earlier this week.

The ceremony, a key moment in Israel’s Independence Day celebrations, traditionally honors people who have made significant contributions to the state and its society. Shapiro’s inclusion as a non-Israeli figure highlights the growing role of international Jewish voices in shaping the discourse surrounding Israel and its global standing.
