A three-year-old boy lost consciousness Wednesday afternoon in Bnei Brak, a predominantly ultra-Orthodox city near Tel Aviv, after swallowing a piece of sponge at home. Emergency services received a frantic call shortly before 3 p.m. reporting the incident.
Medical teams from United Hatzalah and Magen David Adom (Israel's national emergency medical service) rushed to the scene. Upon arrival at the apartment, responders encountered a distressing situation: the toddler lay in an altered state of consciousness, his face turning blue from severe oxygen deprivation to his brain and lungs. The situation demanded immediate intervention, as every passing second directly threatened the child's life.
Moshe Delvarian and Eliya Halevi, United Hatzalah medics who arrived first on scene, described the emergency: "The toddler was in life-threatening danger after choking on a piece of sponge, according to family members. We performed life-saving procedures including the Heimlich maneuver, designed to expel foreign objects from the airway. Thank G-d, he resumed breathing on his own. After his condition stabilized, he was evacuated to Schneider Children's Medical Center for further treatment and examination."
