Gideon's Chariots: Israel is trying to scare Hamas, but Hamas is unimpressed
As Hamas digs in, the coming weeks will test Israel’s strategy to dismantle the terrorist group and bring our hostages home.

Israel has announced the launch of Operation “Gideon’s Chariots,” a major military offensive aimed at conquering significant parts of the Gaza Strip, defeating Hamas, and securing the release of all hostages.
The decision, unanimously approved by the Political-Security Cabinet on May 4, has drawn a defiant response from Hamas, with the terrorist group dismissing Israel’s strategy as futile.
IDF’s Ambitious Plan
IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effi Defrin addressed the nation yesterday (Monday), outlining the operation’s objectives. “Operation Strength and Sword achieved many successes, but Hamas remains defiant,” Defrin said. “We are advancing to Operation ‘Gideon’s Chariots,’ which will include a broad offensive, relocating most of the Strip’s population, continued strikes, elimination of terrorists, and dismantling infrastructure.”
The plan, formulated by the IDF Chief of Staff and approved by the Defense Minister and Prime Minister, focuses on:
Humanitarian Measures and Security Zone
The operation includes a humanitarian plan, approved by the Cabinet, to deliver aid through civilian companies in a secure, IDF-controlled zone near Rafah, with screenings to block Hamas operatives. A humanitarian blockade will persist until operations and evacuations begin. The Cabinet also approved measures to prevent Hamas from controlling aid, undermining its governance. Discussions noted that Gaza currently has sufficient food supplies.
Israel aims to retain cleared areas within an expanded security zone, even if a hostage deal is reached, based on the “Witkoff model.” This zone will protect Israeli communities and prevent arms smuggling to Hamas.
Hamas’s Defiant Response
Hamas reacted quickly: Yesterday, its leader Bassem Naim stated: “There is no point in negotiations or addressing new proposals in light of the Zionist war of starvation against our people.” The group argued that Israel’s plan to apply pressure through military conquest will not lead to hostage releases, dismissing the operation’s objectives.
Defrin countered: “Hamas has misjudged our determination. Hamas is the one starving and plundering the Strip.” He emphasized the IDF’s readiness, noting sufficient forces and ongoing recruitment efforts, including from ultra-Orthodox communities, despite the challenges of mobilization.
