The IDF and Shin Bet announced the elimination of Mohammed Sinwar, head of Hamas’s military wing in Gaza, in a targeted strike on May 13, 2025, in a highly significant blow to the terrorist organization.

The operation, detailed in a statement by Israel’s National Information Directorate, targeted an underground command and control complex in Khan Younis, where Sinwar and other senior Hamas operatives were located.

The National Information Directorate described Sinwar as a central planner of the October 7, 2023, attack, which killed approximately 1,200 people and saw 251 abducted. Alongside his brother, Yahya Sinwar, eliminated in October 2024, Mohammed was instrumental in orchestrating the massacre and promoting Hamas’s violent ideology, which included war crimes, crimes against humanity, and holding hostages in inhumane conditions. The strike also neutralized other senior Hamas operatives, though their identities were not disclosed.

The targeted complex was deliberately built under a civilian hospital, a tactic the Directorate condemned as a “cynical exploitation” of civilian infrastructure as a shield for terrorism. The IDF emphasized that precautions were taken to minimize civilian casualties, aligning with Israel’s stated policy of precision targeting to avoid harming non-combatants.

The operation sends a clear message, according to the Directorate: “We will hold accountable anyone who threatens or harms us. Any entity that promotes terror against our citizens will bear the consequences.” This reflects Israel’s ongoing campaign to dismantle Hamas’s leadership following the October 7 attack, which sparked the current war.
