Captain Reei Biran, from the town of Shoresh, fell last night in the southern Gaza Strip. Biran served as a team commander in the Golani Brigade’s elite recon unit.

New details have emerged regarding the incident in which he fell:

  1. Over the past several days, Golani forces have been conducting a battalion-level offensive targeting terror infrastructure in the Khan Younis area. As part of the mission, troops were placing explosives in buildings suspected of housing terror activity, with the goal of demolishing them. Approximately two hours after the buildings were rigged, they were detonated. It was during this controlled explosion that Captain Biran was fatally injured. Initial IDF assessments suggest Biran was struck by shrapnel or debris—likely a fragment from one of the structures that exploded. The incident appears to be an operational accident, not the result of enemy fire. The IDF has launched a formal investigation into the event, seeking to determine how a soldier was fatally injured by the detonation of buildings carried out by his own unit, and whether the tragic outcome could have been prevented.

Reei will be laid to rest at 1:00 p.m. today (Friday) in Moshav Nahalal.

May Reei's memory be blessed.
