The Director General of the Ministry of Defense, Major General Eyal Zamir, who announced his resignation from his position last night, is one of the leading candidates for the Chief of Staff position following the resignation of Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi.

Zamir was the Deputy Chief of Staff and competed against Herzi Halevi, who was ultimately chosen for the position.

According to a report on the 'Israel Hayom' website, in addition to Zamir's many achievements over the past year, he is also perceived as someone not connected to the October 7th failure. Zamir was not a member of the IDF General Staff Forum on October 7, and he has no direct responsibility for the failure on Black Saturday.

Last night (Monday), senior military commentator Yossi Yehoshua referred to Eyal Zamir's resignation from his position and said: "He will leave, and there is no one who can step into his shoes."

Joshua noted, "I would like to see Zamir as the next Chief of Staff. He knew how to work excellently with Gallant and Netanyahu. He was not a political man. He didn't get dirty. If there is someone who can rehabilitate the General Staff, it's this man."
